Debuted at Dubai Design Week, 2019 — Kawn's first public statement.
The piece takes its base from the outline of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, on the border of Jordan — a destination that draws visitors from across the world, and a place many in the region return to.
The base is split into two conditions. One half is lacquered wood, fluted and sealed. The other is a full wrap of brass and copper tubing, circling the rounded section of the base, placed piece by piece, tube by tube, in a sequence that exists only once. Above them, a marble top holds the surface as it once was — before decades of retreat pulled the shoreline back and left the sea shrinking year over year.
Behind the base, a mirror stands at its width. A fixed light sits above the point on the base where the two halves meet — trained on the exact coordinate where the water has receded.
Three components, one configuration: base, mirror, light, positioned in relation to each other and unable to be repeated. Hundreds of tubes, each placed by hand, one at a time, on-site — a sequence no drawing or instruction can reproduce.
Intended home: a hotel on the Dead Sea, where the piece sits within view of what it is measuring.
Finish / Materials: Marble top with a base combining fluted, sealed lacquered wood and a full wrap of individually placed brass and copper tubes around its rounded section.
Dimensions: (W) 210, (D) 48, (H) 200 cm
